Albina Shagimuratova (Soprano)

Dazzling Russian coloratura soprano Albina Shagimuratova first came to international attention as the winner of the Gold Medal in the 2007 Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow.  This was followed quickly by her European opera debut as the Queen of the Night at the Salzburg Festival under the baton of Riccardo Muti.  She has been hailed by Opera News as “a phenomenon that must be heard to be believed” and by the New York Times for her “riveting Lucia . . . . “

Regarded as the world’s leading interpreter of this legendarily difficult role, she has sung the Queen of the Night with the Metropolitan Opera, Teatro alla Scala (available on DVD), Vienna State Opera, Deutsche Oper, Berlin, San Francisco Opera, Bolshoi Theater, Los Angeles Opera, Houston Grand Opera, the Hamburg Staatsoper and the Lucerne Festival among others.  It will also serve as her debut at the Royal Opera, Covent Garden later this season in the celebrated David McVicar production.

Ms. Shagimuratova has added the most celebrated heroines of nineteenth century opera to her repertoire in recent seasons, all to great acclaim.  She has sung Verdi’s Violetta to open the Bolshoi Theater and at Houston Grand Opera.  As Gilda in Rigoletto she triumphed earlier this season at San Francisco Opera conducted by Nicola Luisotti.  It will also serve as her debut role this season at Lyric Opera of Chicago conducted by Evan Rogister.  In a new production by John Doyle at HGO, she sang her first Lucia di Lammermoor and repeated the role at the Deutsche Oper Berlin and the Bolshoi.  She also re-opened the Bolshoi Theater for opera productions with a new Ruslan and Ludmila by visionary director Dmitri Tcherniakov conducted by Vladimir Jurowski (forthcoming on DVD).  Her Glyndebourne Festival debut came as Donna Anna in Don Giovanni under Robin Ticciati.  In summer 2013, she will sing her first Manon in concert with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Luxembourg.  Her many future engagements include returns to the Metropolitan Opera, the Royal Opera, Covent Garden, and Houston Grand Opera and debuts at the Bayerische Staatsoper and Opera de Paris.

Albina Shagimuratova has appeared with the world’s leading orchestras in a diverse concert repertoire.  She made her Boston Symphony Orchestra debut under Rafael Frьhbeck de Burgos in both Rossini’s Stabat Mater and Mendelssohn’s incidental music to A Midsummer Night’s Dream.  With the Houston Symphony under Hans Graf, she has sung both a program of Mozart’s concert arias and the Poulenc Gloria.  She made her debut at the Maggio Musicale, Florence, with Mozart’s Requiem led by Zubin Mehta.  This seasons she also sings the Beethoven Ninth Symphony with the Danish National Symphony Orchestra under Mo. Frьbeck and adds the Britten War Requiem to her repertoire at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London under the leadership of Edward Gardner as part of the City of London Festival.  She has also collaborated with James Conlon, Patrick Summers, Peter Schneider, Adam Fischer and Vladimir Spivakov.

Albina Shagimuratova was born in Tashkent (former USSR) to a family of lawyers.  Her parents supported her early musical interests, and at the age of five she began performing publicly to her father’s accordion accompaniment.  The family later moved to Kazan where she studied choral conducting at Kazan Music College and Kazan State Conservatory of Music.  She graduated with honors and a doctoral degree from the Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory.  During her education in Moscow, Ms. Shagimuratova became a member of the K. S. Stanislavsky and V. I. Nemirovich-Danchenko Moscow Academic Music Theater.  There she sang the Swan in The Tale of Tsar Sultan and the Queen of Shemakha in The Golden Cockerel of Rimsky-Korsakov.  During this time, she also sang the Mozart Requiem in the opening concert of the famed December Nights of Sviatoslav Richter in Moscow.  She has also sung the Beethoven Ninth Symphony and Mahler Eighth Symphony with the Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra there under Vladimir Fedoseyev.  She is a proud alumna of the Houston Grand Opera Studio.

In February 2009, the President of Russia awarded her the title of “People’s Artist of Tatarstan,” and in 2011, she was personally awarded the Tukai State Award by the President Minnikhanov of Tatarstan.  In 2012 she won the 23rd Russian National Theatrical Golden Mask Award in the Best Opera Actress category for her portrayal of the title role of Lucia di Lammermoor.  She continues to study with Dmitry Vdovin in Moscow and Renata Scotto in New York.
