Pavel Gershtein (Conductor)

Pavel Gershtein is the artistic director and chief conductor of the Kostroma symphony orchestra and representative of the Vladimir Spivakov international fund in Kostroma. He is also the artistic director of the Russian-Swiss Music Festival and the International Musical Festival “Kostroma Symphonic”.

Maestro Gershtein is a graduate of the Nizhny Novgorod State Conservatory and holds an artistic program degree (equivalent to doctoral studies) from the Novosibirsk State Conservatory with a major in opera and symphonic conducting from the class of a famous maestro Arnold Katz. Since 1994 he has taught in the department of orchestral and choral conducting of the Nizhny Novgorod State Conservatory.

In 1999, P. Gershtein was appointed as artistic director and the chief conductor of the Kostroma symphonic orchestra. At that time the ensemble gained the status of professional orchestra and began regular concert activities, gaining recognition in and outside of Kostroma. Accomplished soloists, prizewinners of international competitions, regularly perform in the concerts of the orchestra.

As a guest conductor, Maestro Gershtein has performed with the Khabarovsk chamber orchestra, “The soloists of Nizhny Novgorod” orchestra, the State Symphony Orchestra “New Russia”, Saint Petersburg Academic Symphony Orchestra, the State symphonic orchestra of Belarus, the Yekaterinburg “Bach – Orchestra”, the Novosibirsk, Kislovodsk, Krasnoyarsk, Volgograd and Yaroslavl academic symphonic orchestras, the Central symphonic orchestra of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, the National symphonic orchestra of Armenia, the student symphonic orchestra of Bern Conservatory (Switzerland), the Symphony Orchestra «Junge Philharmonie Köln» (Germany), Symphony Orchestra of Korea Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) (South Korea, Seoul), and others.

Under his direction a number of premiere performances have taken place, works by composers from the Russian Federation, Switzerland and other parts of the world. Maestro Gershtein has gained particular note in recent years with performances of the major symphonic work “Yellow Stars” about the Holocaust, by the renowned Soviet and Russian composer, Isaac Schwartz.

On June, 11, 2012 conductor Pavel Gershtein was invited to conduct the famous Saint-Petersburg Academic Philharmonic Orchestra in its well-known Grand Hall named after Dmitry Shostakovich.The 2012 concert season Pavel Gershtein worked as a principal guest conductor of Moscow chamber orchestra of the musical center of Pavel Slobodkin

Among the last significant cultural events for Orchestra were the – III and IV International Festivals “Kostroma symphonic” in the fall of 2013 and 2014 where a number of world premieres of new music by Swiss composer Michel Rochat and Russian composer and musician Alexei Ribnikov took place. Kostroma gubernski Symphony Orchestra under the conduction of Pavel Gershtein took part in the closing ceremony of the XI International Festival “Moscow Meets Friends” held in celebration of the 20th anniversary of Vladimir Spivakov International Charity Foundation, as well as the Year of Culture in Russia. 

Festival “Moscow Meets Friends” – is the biggest project of Vladimir Spivakov International Charity Foundation created to discover new stars of music and art. It is held annually since 2004. On the basis of the Kostroma Symphony Orchestra every year takes place the “summer music courses in Europe” (AFAF Summer Music Courses in Europe). 

Young musicians from Korea, Japan, China, Colombia, Brazil, Canada, Russia and the United States, winners of the famous American Festival of Fine Arts (artistic director of the festival Vladimir Agilin), come to perform with the ensemble and improve their skills.
