Badri Maisuradze (Tenor)

Biography

Born in Tbilisi. He started to train as a dramatic actor (teacher Mikhail Tumanishvili), and played in several productions at Tbilisi's Theatre of Cinema Actors of which Tumanishvili was artistic director. He also appeared in several films.
In a student production in which he had a singing part, he was noticed by the famous singer and teacher, Zurab Andzhaparidze, a circumstance which was to play a decisive role in his life. In 1989, he completed his studies at Tbilisi Conservatoire (Professor Beuashvili's class).
From 1989-1990, he was a probationer at the Bolshoi Theatre (Professor Zurab Sotkilava).
From 1990-93, he was a soloist at Tbilisi State Opera.
He joined the Bolshoi Theatre as soloist in 1995.
He teaches at the Galina Vishnevskaya Centre for Opera Singing.

In 1998, he sang the solo tenor in Britten's The War Requiem at the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatoire (New Japan Philharmonic, conductors Seiji Ozawa and Mstislav Rostropovich).

Tours

He started his international career in 1993, singing the role of The Pretender in a production of Boris Godunov at the Opera Royal de Wallonie in Liege (Belgium).
In 1995, he made his debut at Sydney Opera House in the part of Radames, and after this he made frequent appearances there in the Verdi repertoire. In 1997, he made his Toronto debut singing de Grieux (Manon Lescaut) for the Canadian Opera Company.
In 1998, he appeared again with the Company as Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly.
In 1999, he participated in a La Scala production of Mazeppa singing the role of Andrei (conductor Mstislav Rostropovich).
In 2000, he made his debut at Vienna State Opera as Cavarodossi in Tosca.
In 2002, he returned to La Scala singing the role of Samson (Samson et Dalila, director – Hugo de Ana).
Also in 2002, he sang Riccardo (Un Ballo in Maschera) at Dresden State Opera.
In 2003, he appeared as Radames (Aida) at New Israel Opera (Tel-Aviv), as Cavarodossi (Tosca) with the Canadian Opera Company (Toronto), and Canio (Pagliacci) for Hungarian State Opera (Budapest).
In 2004, he sang the title role in Otello for Royal Swedish Opera (Stockholm), for the Theatre of Opera and Music at Malmo (Sweden) and for Royal Danish Opera. In the same year he appeared as Radames (Aida) at La Theatre de la Monnaie, Brussels.
In 2005, he sang Don Calro at the Royal Swedish Opera, Otello at the Estonia National Opera (Tallinn).
In 2006-07, he appeared as Samson in Dalhalla (Sweden) and also at the Slovene National Theatre Opera and Ballet (Ljubljana), as Manrico (Il Trovatore) at the Royal Swedish Opera, as Don Alvaro (La Forza del Destino) at the Lithuanian National Opera (Vilnius), as Dick Johnson (La Fanciulla del West) at Teatro Vittorio Emanuele (Messina, Italy), as Giuliano Madici (Leoncavallo's I Medici) at the Puccini Festival (Torre del Lago, Italy).
In 2008, he appeared at the Estonia National Opera, performing parts in The Queen of Spades and Simon Boccanerga.
Also in 2008, he sang Luigi (Il Tabarro) at Teatro Massimo (Palermo, Italy).
He has made frequent appearances at, among other opera houses, the Maryinsky Theatre (Aida), Deutsche Oper, Berlin (Il Trovatore, Aida, Nabucco), Teatro Comunale, Florence (Madama Butterfly), Teatro Real, Madrid (Ernani, The Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk), San Carlo Opera House, Naples (The Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk), Teatro Liceo, Barcelona (Un Ballo in Maschera, Samson et Dalila).

Awards

In 1994, he won lst prize at the Francisco Vinas Competition for vocalists, in Barcelona, and at the international Jussi Bjorling Competition for tenors in Sweden.
In 2001, he was awarded the Order of Friendship.
