Dmitri Hvorostovsky (Baritone)

Internationally acclaimed Russian baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky was born and educated in Krasnoyarsk, Siberia. In 1989, he won the prestigious Cardiff Singer of the World Competition. From the start, audiences were bowled over by his cultivated voice, innate sense of musical line and natural legato. After his Western operatic debut at the Opéra de Nice in Tchaikovsky's The Queen of Spades, his career exploded to encompass regular engagements at renowned international festivals and the world's most prestigious opera houses, among them the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, New York's Metropolitan Opera, the Opéra de Paris, the Bayerische Staatsoper, the Salzburg Festival, the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, the Wiener Staatsoper and the Lyric Opera of Chicago.

A celebrated recitalist in demand in every corner of the globe - from the Orient to the Middle East, from Australia to South America - Hvorostovsky has appeared at such venues as Wigmore Hall in London, Queen's Hall in Edinburgh, Carnegie Hall in New York, the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, the Tchaikovsky Conservatoire in Moscow, the Liceu in Barcelona, Suntory Hall in Tokyo and the Musikverein in Vienna. The singer regularly performs in concert with top orchestras including the New York Philharmonic and the Rotterdam Philharmonic and alongside conductors such as James Levine, Bernard Haitink, Claudio Abbado, Lorin Maazel, Zubin Mehta, Yuri Termikanov and Valery Gergiev.

Dmitri retains strong musical and personal contacts with Russia. He became the first opera singer to give a solo concert with orchestra and chorus on Red Square in Moscow; this concert was televised in over twenty-five countries. Dmitri has since sung at a large number of prestigious concert events in Moscow as a part of his own special series, Dmitri Hvorostovsky and Friends. He has invited such celebrated artists as Renée Fleming, Sumi Jo and Sondra Radvanovsky. In 2005, he gave an historic tour throughout Russia, travelling to many cities at the invitation of President Putin, singing to crowds of hundreds of thousands of people in honour of soldiers who gave their lives during World War II. Dmitri now tours the cities of Russia and Eastern Europe on an annual basis.

Dmitri Hvorostovsky's extensive discography spans recital and aria discs for Philips Classics and for Delos Records, including a disc of Verdi arias, as well as complete opera performances on CD and DVD. His most recent releases include 2007's Heroes and Villains, a disc of Soviet-era songs entitled Moscow Nights with accompaniment by Constantine Orbelian leading the Moscow Chamber Orchestra and the Style of Five traditional Russian ensemble, a DVD in concert with the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal and Passione di Napoli, a compendium of blockbuster Neapolitan songs. He has also starred in Don Giovanni Unmasked, an award-winning film (by Rhombus Media) based on the Mozart opera, tackling the dual roles of the lecherous nobleman and his disapproving manservant.

Dmitri opened the current 2008-2009 season in San Francisco with Simon Boccanegra. He has also sung ll trovatore with the Metropolitan Opera and at Covent Garden. In concert, Dmitri has been touring Europe, singing for the first time with celebrated pianist Evgeny Kissin as his accompanist. He has also undertaken Lieder concerts in the USA, Europe and Russia. In May 2009, Dmitri will be reunited with Anna Netrebko for a number of spectacular gala concerts which are sure to prove some of the highlights of the season.

The 2009-2010 season will see Dmitri appearing at the opera houses of San Francisco, London (Covent Garden) and Vienna in addition to an extensive touring schedule which will take him throughout Russia and to Asia. Symphonique de Montréal.

Hvorostovsky died on 22 November 2017 in London after a two-and-a-half-year battle with brain cancer.
