"Scheherazade"
N.A. Rimsky-Korsakov (1844–1908) - a brilliant symphonic suite. The composer proposed the composition to the composition:
“Sultan Shahriyar, convinced of the treachery and infidelity of women, gave the vow to execute each of his wives after the first night, but Sultana Sheherazade saved her life by being able to occupy him with fairy tales, telling them to him for 1001 nights ..."
Mikhail Fokin, referring to the work of N.A. Rimsky-Korsakov, did not consider himself bound by the original plot. He was attracted to music - bright, spectacular, colorful. On its basis, he made his own libretto, excluding the third part from the four-part composition, which caused indignation of the family of the late composer.
However, the choreographer’s imagination was based on musical images. The symphonic masterpiece in the innovative production of Fokine found another life in art - this time on the ballet stage.
Chopeniana
Choreographer Mikhail Fokin went down in the history of Russian and world ballet as an experimenter, giving the art of dance a new expression. Among the distinguishing features of his work is the creation of productions of non-ballet music. One of these performances was Chopiniana, staged in 1909 to the music of F. Chopin in the A. Glazunov orchestra.
The performance is devoid of plot, but full of emotions. In his play, Fokine resurrects the images of the romantic ballet of the 19th century, conveying a mood of reverie and light sadness, a state on the verge of sleep and reality of a young poet who found himself in the world of sylphs. Thanks to the choreographer’s skill, Chopin’s enchanting music becomes visible.
"Bolero"
Maurice Ravel (1875–1937) created masterpieces in absolutely all the genres he touched — piano, orchestral, chamber music, opera. A number of his works (choreographic symphony-ballet “Daphnis and Chloe”, choreographic poem “Waltz”) synthesize the features of several genres. One of the most striking examples of such a synthesis is Bolero (1928). The one-act, plotless ballet was written for the great dancer Ida Rubinstein. However, soon the Bolero began to be performed not only as a choreographic, but also as a purely symphonic composition. Sensual dance, leading to ecstasy, the highest point of frenzy - “Bolero” fascinates, captures from the first to the last note. This play is the quintessence of the composer's astounding orchestral prowess. It is “Bolero” in our days that has become a kind of symbol of Ravel’s work.
