Mstislav Rostropovich (Conductor)

March 27 1927. In Baku was born the world’s famous musician, outstanding cellist, maestro Mstislav Rostropovich. The creative atmosphere, which reigned in the house of Rostropovich, and musical evenings played the most important role in formation and profession selection of young Mstislav. It is not accidental that the first piece of music of Mstislav Rostropovich, “Polka”, was written under the effect of that musical medium, in which he was growing in Baku. After their stay in Baku from 1925 to 1931 the family of Rostropovich moves to Moscow.

Paying permanent attention and highly evaluating the merits of creative intelligentsia, President of Azerbaijan Heydar Aliyev in 1998 issued a decree on the creation of the memorial museum of Rostropovich in Baku. According to the decree, the museum is located in the house, where the family of Rostropovich lived in 1925—1931. The street, where the home-museum is located, now bears the name of Leopold (father) and Mstislav (son) Rostropovich. On March 4, 2002, the inauguration of the home-museum’s exposition took place. At present there are more than 2000 rare exhibits in the funds of the museum. Among the exhibits there are unique objects, which belong personally to the family of Rostropovich. There you can see a carpet and furniture of the end of XIX — beginning of XX century. Among the exhibits there are also photographs, letters, autographs, concert tail coat, sticks, records, rewards and other noteworthy exhibits. M. Rostropovich himself, his wife G. Vishnevskaya and many honorable guests participated at the ceremony of the opening.

Arrivals of M. Rostropovich in Baku cover different periods of his biography. So even before the immigration, M. Rostropovich repeatedly was in Baku on the tours in 60—70’s, supported friendly and creative connections with his Azerbaijan associates. The first visit of M. Rostropovich in Baku after the return from the immigration took place in 1997, 24 years later his last visit. In connection with the 70th anniversary of M. Rostropovich, he was rewarded with the “Shokhret” (“Glory2”) order. He was also awarded the title of the honorable professor of Baku Music Academy. From 1997, M. Rostropovich has made the yearly visits to his native Baku a good tradition. In 1998, during his next arrival, the world famous musician said: “My first impressions are such as if I simply returned to my place, to my native land. I am too pleased and feel very happy.” In Azerbaijan, besides the home-museum of L. and M. Rostropovich, there are the “Vishnevskaya-Rostropovich” fund and the Music School № 21, which bears the name of father and son of Rostropovich. On each of his visits in Baku M. Rostropovich continues his charity mission, gives master-classes for the students of Baku Music Academy.
