The ballet Petrushka was premiered in 1911 at the Paris Theatre du Chatelet as part of Sergei Diaghilev's Russian Seasons. This legendary production was one of those which made Russian ballet famous throughout the world.
Petrushka was produced at the Bolshoi by Vladimir Ryabtsev - in 1921 and by Konstantin Boyarsky in 1964 (both productions with choreography by Mikhail Fokine).
This time round the Bolshoi is turning to the production by Leonid Leontiev, who took part in the first Russian Seasons and in the 20's of the 20th century was the artistic director of the Petrograd Theatre of Opera and Ballet (formerly - at that moment in time - the Maryinsky).
In 1920, Leontiev revived the Fokine ballet for the Petrograd Company, himself dancing the lead. Today's revival of this version will be by choreographer Sergei Vikharev, who last season made a successful debut at the Bolshoi with his reconstructed version of Coppelia. The Bolshoi revival of Leontiev's Petrushka represents the Theatre's contribution to the Diaghilev Russian Seasons centenary celebrations.
