Maksim Kuzmin-Karavayev (Bass)

Maxim Kuzmin-Karavaev graduated from the Moscow Conservatory and continued his education at the Galina Vishnevskaya Opera Centre. He has participated in workshops with Riccardo Muti, Alexander Malt, Vladimir Chernov, Diane Zola, Richard Bado, Lenore Rosenberg, and Mirella Freni.

He has been a soloist at Novaya Opera Theatre Moscow since 2007, a regular guest soloist at the Galina Vishnevskaya Opera Centre since 2006, and at Bolshoi Theatre Moscow.

His operatic repertoire comprises Uberto in Pergolesi’s La Serva Padrona, Calchas in Gluck’s Iphigenie en Aulide, Melisso in Händel’s Alcina, Don Alfonso in Così fan tutte, Figaro in Le Nozze di Figaro, Oroveso in Norma, Count Rodolfo in La Sonnambula, Don Magnifico in La Cenerentola, Don Basilio in Il barbiere di Siviglia, Monterone and Sparafucile in Rigoletto, Pagano in I Lombardi, Ramfis in Aida, Banco in Macbeth, Ferrando in Il Trovatore, Colline in La Bohème, Simone in Gianni Schicchi, Mephistophélès in Faust, König Marke in Tristan und Isolde, King René in Iolanta, Gremin in Eugene Onegin, Farlaf and Svyatozar in Ruslan and Lyudmila, the title role in Prince Igor, Sobakin in The Tsar’s Bride, Pimen in Boris Godunov, Frère Laurent in Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette.

He appeared as Figaro in Le nozze di Figaro (Opera Ischia Festival, Italy), Pimen in Boris Godunov (Opera Festival Budapest, Opéra Royal de Wallonie Liège, Debrecen, and Santander International Festival, Spain), Uberto in Pergolesi’s La Serva Padrona (Istanbul), Calchas in Iphigenie en Aulide (Rome, Riccardo Muti, conductor), Ser Amantio di Nicolao in Gianni Schicchi (Lyon), Alfonso D’Este in Lucrezia Borgia (Santiago de Chile), An Old Gypsy in Rachmaninoff’s Aleko (Teatro Colón Buenos Aires), Agamemnon in Taneyev’s Oresteia (Fisher Center for Performing Arts, New York, USA), Monterone in Rigoletto (Geneva), Josias Priest in Nyman and Purcell’s Dido, Frère Laurent in Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette, Ramfis in Aida in concert (all Novaya Opera, Moscow), and Raimondo in Lucia di Lammermoor (Kazan).

In concert Maxim Kuzmin-Karavaev sang bass parts in Haydn’s and Rossini’s Stabat Mater (Big Hall of Moscow Conservatory, conductor Dmitri Jurowski), Schumann, Verdi, Mozart, Fauré Requiems, Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle, Bach’s Matthäus-Passion and Weihnachts-Oratorium (Novaya Opera, Moscow), and Saint-Saëns' Requiem with Russian National Orchestra led by Mikhail Pletnev.

Recent and upcoming performances include Pimen in Boris Godunov (Bavarian State Opera Munich), Rodolfo in La Sonnambula (Theater am Gärtnerplatz Munich), Bach’s Mass in B Minor (Kazan, Bolshoi Theatre Moscow), Bartolo in Le nozze di Figaro (Bolshoi Theatre Moscow), Basilio in Il barbiere di Siviglia (Hamburg), a concert tour in UAE, and Raimondo in Lucia di Lammermoor (Toulouse), among others.

Maxim Kuzmin-Karavaev is the laureate of the International Glinka Singing Competition in Moscow (3rd Prize, 2009), the International Opera Singers Contest of Galina Vishnevskaya (2008), and Bella Voce Young Opera Singers` Competition (Moscow, 2002).
